Property development of cargo centre South

at Airport Leipzig-Halle

Until middle of 2006 IPF Germany GmbH developed the new cargo centre “south” at the airport Leipzig-Halle. As a first step IPF Germany had to analyse the potential air cargo growth rate. Subsequently the Master Layout plan and realisation steps scenarios have been developed.
In the first project phase the engineers of IPF determined all relevant basic data’s about volume of cargo, distribution channels and required floor space. This was used to estimate the future volume of cargo and to develop the Master Layout plan.

The main part of the project was dedicated to the most efficient design of the cargo logistic concept like the connection to the apron area at airside and to the truck docking station at land side. The engineers of IPF were focussing to create an adaptable and innovative ideal concept for the cargo centre. Therefor each cargo dispatch step, from the airfield with loading and unloading, the handling of the freight documents up to the dispatch side, including the storage and order picking systems have been developed for import and export activities.

The Master Layout plan has taken an adaptable and modular concept of the rental areas for dispatch service providers as well as areas for own requirements of the Flughafen GmbH into consideration. Finally the responsible departments of the Flughafen GmbH and the engineering / logistic experts from IPF Germany choose together the technically and economically best Master Layout plan for the Cargo Centre South at Airport Leipzig-Halle to go into realisation.

In conjunction with the development of the airport and the decision to relocate the runway "south", operational relevant services like snow ploughing and Ice removal techniques had to be redesigned. Therefore a simulation for the snow ploughing services on the runways has been developed with Tecnomatix eM-Plant and the results have been documentation with Factory CAD to evaluate the budget planning.

Currently the first stage of the new cargo centre is already in construction and will go into operation at spring 2008.

During this project IPF could prove once again their extensive experiences and innovative ideas in the field of the plant layout development and large area logistics engineering. With our comprehensive Know How in planning of air cargo centres we will also have a strong influence for the development of other cargo-airports around the world.
